1. Introduction: Essential Information for Your Trip to Peru
At Qoyawarkuna Travel, we want your planning process to be as pleasant as your trip. We have compiled the most frequent questions regarding bookings, logistics, health, and destinations in Peru to offer you clear and concise information. If your query is not listed here, please do not hesitate to contact us.
2. Questions about Bookings and Payments
How can I book a tour with Qoyawarkuna Travel?
Answer: You can book directly through our website, via email, or by contacting our advisors through WhatsApp. To confirm the reservation, we require a non-refundable initial deposit (generally $30\%$ – $50\%$ of the total cost) and your complete passport details.
When must I pay the final balance of my tour?
Answer: You must settle the outstanding balance in full 30 to 45 days before the service start date, as specified in your voucher. Last-minute bookings require full payment at the time of confirmation.
Does the tour price include the Cusco Tourist Ticket (BTC)?
Answer: Generally, no. The BTC is a personal and mandatory ticket required to enter most archaeological sites (Sacred Valley, 4 Ruins, etc.). The traveler must purchase it directly at COSITUC or at the first archaeological site.
What is your cancellation policy?
Answer: Our cancellation policies are detailed in the “Booking and Cancellation Policy” section. Please note that trekking permits (Inca Trail, Salkantay) and train tickets to Machu Picchu are non-refundable once issued.
3. Questions about Health and Altitude (Soroche)
How can I prevent Altitude Sickness (Soroche)?
Answer: We recommend gradual acclimatization. Ideally, spend the first day in Cusco resting, drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals and alcohol, and drinking coca tea. Many travelers choose to go directly to the Sacred Valley (lower altitude) from the airport.
What is the altitude of Cusco and Machu Picchu?
Answer: The city of Cusco is located at $3,399$ m / $11,152$ ft above sea level. The citadel of Machu Picchu is at a lower altitude, at $2,430$ m / $7,972$ ft above sea level.
Must I purchase travel insurance?
Answer: Yes, it is mandatory. Your insurance must cover medical emergencies, high-mountain evacuation (especially for treks), and trip cancellation.
4. Questions about Logistics and Guides
How does the pick-up at Cusco airport (CUZ) work?
Answer: If you have contracted a transfer, our staff will wait for you at the exit of the arrivals area holding a sign with your name. We monitor your flight to adjust for any delays.
In which languages are the tours conducted?
Answer: All our tours are guided in Spanish and English. Upon request, we can arrange private tours in other languages (e.g., French, German, Portuguese) for an additional cost.
What should I bring for multi-day treks?
Answer: For treks (Salkantay, Choquequirao), you must bring: Original passport, sleeping bag (available for rent), thermal clothing, waterproof jacket, flashlight, trekking poles (available for rent), and cash in Soles for personal expenses/tips.
5. Questions about Machu Picchu
How far in advance must I book Machu Picchu?
Answer: For the high season (May-September), we recommend booking 3 to 4 months in advance. Reservations for Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain require booking 5 to 6 months in advance due to limited entry quotas.
What can and what can I not bring into Machu Picchu?
Answer: You may bring a small backpack (max. 5 kg / 11 lbs), water, and a camera. Tripods, trekking poles (unless required by the visitor for disability), umbrellas, and food/alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
